Civic Empowerment completes Office Environment Skills training at Hyde Park Neighborhood Club
Civic Empowerment successfully completed the Office Environment Skills Training program with junior high and high school students at the Hyde Park Neighborhood Club. Throughout the program, students learned various aspects of professional work culture, including professional attire and appearance, professional mannerisms, establishing a good work ethic, time management and organizational skills. “The teens and I have enjoyed and appreciated every lesson”, said Abby Hymen, Youth Coordinator for the Club. “If I could have it my way, we could extend the program to the end of the school year.” The Hyde Park Neighborhood Club is a community center located in the heart of Chicago’s Hyde Park community, which seeks to enhance the quality of life for neighborhood residents, from toddlers to seniors, by providing recreational, extra-curricular and special needs programming.
Civic Empowerment recently returned to St. Leonard’s Ministry to empower program participants with budget development and management skills. “To assist in learning, clarification was provided (to the participants) to meet the real situation, rather than a “possible scenario”, said Erin Day, a program coordinator for the Ministry.
St. Leonard’s Ministries provides comprehensive residential and case management services to men and women who have been released from prison without the skills, housing and other necessary resources to rebuild their lives. The program serves community members in Chicago’s near West Side.

"The most appealing facets of this training were the use of real world examples (i.e. financial aid refund check, credit cards, "entertainment" expenses) to illustrate how easy it is to spend beyond one's income and live beyond one's means in perpetual debt."

“I loved the activities that went along with the concepts. They were very hands on. I appreciated the use of technology and music to support the concepts being presented. ”
